Even though Dr. Justin Becerra makes every attempt to save and maintain your natural teeth, there are instances in which a tooth or teeth might have to be taken out. A simple extraction takes out a tooth that's visible over the gums. This is typically done for a tooth that's decayed or damaged and cannot be repaired. A surgical extraction takes out a tooth that hasn't erupted over the gums. Surgical extractions are frequently performed to take out impacted teeth, like the wisdom teeth, that don't have sufficient space to fit into your mouth. Whatever the reason for getting an extraction in Alpine Dental Arts, our staff will give you the best treatment. Our Lakewood, CO office provides multiple sedation methods such as nitrous oxide and oral-conscious sedation, which means you can stay calm and comfortable throughout your treatment. Get in touch with our staff for more information or to schedule an exam with Dr. Becerra to improve your smile.

"If you’ve ever felt anxiety about going to the dentist - look no more! Alpine Dental Arts provides a dentist, Justin Becerra, DDS, and staff that will ease your worries! My husband and I had been discussing changing our dentist. A friend of our family was insistent that we give her dentist a try, because her entire family was so impressed with them. My husband and I decided to give Alpine Dental Arts a try, and we actually signed up with a new dental plan to make that happen. We were NOT disappointed ~ Dr Becerra and his staff are amazing! We all know how important the front desk is for first impressions and accommodations. Ramona and Kathy are very welcoming to each and every client, greeting them by name. They are very knowledgeable on dental procedures, and are always willing to assist with all insurance needs. They share a great sense of humor, as does the entire staff, which always helps to make you feel a little more relaxed and comfortable, especially in a dental office.I had the pleasure of having my first 6 month checkup/cleaning done by Crystal. She did a fabulous job with cleaning my teeth, and I told her that she was the first hygienist to clean my teeth without any discomfort. After my cleanings, I leave their office feeling like I had not been to the dentist. Crystal is very professional, does a great job as a hygienist, and is very calming. I have not had the pleasure of working with Joan, but I’m sure she is just as accommodating and professional. Then there is Barb, who has totally turned my life around with a beautiful smile! She accomplished this without me having to go through expensive braces or invasive procedures. I’m 65, and had pretty much planned on dealing with my teeth as they were from here on out. Over the years, they had turned yellow, and it was difficult for me to smile when having my picture taken. The tops of my front lower teeth had been chiseled away by my teeth grinding. I had two upper, pointed canines that had open spaces between nearby teeth. I finally decided to have my teeth whitened professionally, since the over the counter products didn’t seem to do the job. Barb was so patient and explained the whitening process very thoroughly. During my followup visit, she suggested I might be interested in having some bonding work done on the above mentioned problem areas. I wasn’t even aware of such procedures. She actually performed a quick sample of the procedure on my teeth so I would have an idea of what it would look like (before and after). Needless to say, I had the procedures done by Barb, at a low cost. She was very careful, and it was obvious she is a perfectionist. She wanted everything placed perfectly and shining. It was a very simple and quick procedure, with no pain, and no novocaine. It did wonders for my self-esteem!The newest member of the team, Justin Becerra, DDS, replaced the previous and wonderful Steven Anundsen, DDS (who retired). Dr Becerra is amazing as well. Both my husband and I felt very comfortable with Dr Becerra, and both agreed that he is definitely well educated in his field. He kept the incredible staff, which was encouraging to their clients, right from the start. He is very professional, and joins the entire staff with the ability to enlighten your day. Kudos to Alpine Dental Arts!"- C.D. / Google / Sep 06, 2018
If your tooth was damaged or broken from decay, Dr. Becerra can make every attempt to fix it using a bonding, crown, or filling. However, a tooth might be too far into decay and will have to be removed to prevent the decay from spreading — and also to conserve the health of the rest of the teeth. You may also require a dental extraction to remove a tooth or teeth, that cannot fit in your mouth. This involves your third molars, popularly called wisdom teeth, which grow around age 17 – 21. In older kids, infant teeth that haven't naturally fallen out might have to get extracted so that they do not obstruct the permanent teeth. If you're getting orthodontics or contemplating Invisalign, then you might require a tooth extraction to make space for the remaining teeth when they move into their normal place.
What To Expect
Dental extractions are done in our office using local anesthesia on the area near the tooth being removed. Different forms of sedation may be used based on the degree of the extraction and also to help you stay relaxed in case you have some dental worries. Once you're prepared, Dr. Becerra will start the procedure. For a simple extraction, Dr. Becerra will loosen up the tooth using a special device called an elevator prior to removal. A surgical extraction entails making incisions into your gums to get to the tooth. If necessary, the tooth may be broken up into smaller pieces so that it can be taken out. When the tooth has been removed, Dr. Becerra will close the incision in your gums. Dr. Becerra can write a prescription for antibiotics to be taken prior to and following the procedure in case you have a current illness, if your immune system is compromised, if the process is extended, or if you have some other special health problems.
Based upon the anesthesia used throughout your extraction, you might be required to have a responsible adult take you home. As your gums heal, you need to avoid using straws, spitting, and smoking. Your recovery will vary depending on the complexity of your extraction; however, many patients prefer to eat soft, room-temperature food for at least a couple of days following the procedure. Dr. Becerra will speak with you regarding what is normal as you recover and advise you on how to care for your gums. Your gums will probably be inflamed after the procedure, therefore Dr. Becerra suggests over-the-counter pain medicine and cold compresses. Sometimes, Dr. Becerra can give you a written prescription for pain medicine and/or antibiotics. In addition to some proposed follow-up visits, you should schedule regular appointments at Alpine Dental Arts for dental exams and cleanings so that Dr. Becerra can track your oral health following an extraction.
An extraction is generally covered by dental insurance, but your sedation option may not be completely covered. Prior to your extraction, we'll call your insurance company to determine your particular policy and estimate your expenses. If you do not have dental insurance, then Dr. Becerra can speak with you about the numerous payments we take together with information about low-interest medical financing.
